This week on The Vampire Diaries, as Esther prepares to kill her children, Elijah discovers her plans and forces Damon and Stefan to help stop her, putting Elena and Bonnie's lives in danger.
When In Doubt, Kidnap Elena
Elena tells Damon about Esther's plan to kill all The Originals, including Elijah, but while she wants to find a way to save Elijah, Damon and Stefan agree that the whole family needs to be killed if it means Klaus' death. Bonnie tells Elena that Esther is going to harness the power of the full moon that night, while channeling the energy of the Bennett family line, in order to complete the spell that will kill her children. Elijah takes Elena to the woods and tells her about the caverns he used to play in as a child. He figures out that Esther wants to kill all of them, and pulls Elena into the caverns, taking her hostage.
Elijah tells Damon and Stefan that he has Elena, and wants them to kill Bonnie and Abby, thus severing the Bennett bloodline and dissolving Esther's power. Elijah gives them until just before the moon is full to kill Bonnie and Abby, or he will kill Elena. In the caverns, Elijah has sent Rebekah to hold Elena captive, and Rebekah threatens to kill Elena regardless of Elijah's promise to let her go. Stefan tries to think of a way to stop Esther without killing the witches, but Damon already has a plan. He thinks that if they stake one of The Originals, all of them will die. Alaric manages to stake Kole, and all The Originals react as if they had been staked too. Klaus realizes what's happening, finds Kole and removes the stake, but Elijah has to stop Klaus from killing Damon and Stefan, saying he still needs them. He threatens to have Rebekah kill Elena early if the don't tell him where the witches are.
Rebekah chases Elena through the caverns until Elena finds the cave vampires can't enter. At the witch house, Esther tells Bonnie and Abby that Finn will be the willing sacrifice that kills the others. Damon flips a coin to see whether he or Stefan will have to kill the witches. In the caverns, Rebekah manages to douse Elena and the cave in gasoline, telling her she will either come outside or burn. Elena thinks that Rebekah won't kill her because if Rebekah lives through the night, she'll have had her revenge, leaving her with nothing else. Stefan tells Bonnie that the only way to cut off Esther's power is if one of the witches isn't a witch anymore. Damon forces Abby to drink his blood and snaps her neck.
Even the Trees Don't Die
Later, Bonnie understands that Elena had to be saved, but is upset that she seems to always be caught in the middle. Damon realizes that Stefan hasn't had any human blood since threatening to drive Elena off the bridge, and thinks he's making an effort to be good again. Meanwhile, Rebekah shows Klaus a video she took of Elena in the cave, pointing out the drawings in the background indicating there was a white ash tree in Mystic Falls 300 years after they left, and that tree could be used to kill them.
With the Mikaelsons scattered again, it seems that Klaus and Rebekah are once again left to be the sole source of trouble in town over the next few weeks. While it feels like this should be the natural end of this story arc, I'm sure there will be some left overs. I'd like to know what's going on with the crazy doctor lady, and Alaric's power ring needing a recharge, so I hope that all gets explained.
"Why do you look like someone shot a panda bear?"
Damon to Elena
"You spend 146 years with someone, you get to know there tells."
-Damon to Stefan
"It's for the best. I'm better at being the bad guy anyway."
-Damon to Stefan
