The search for Dr. Emmet Cole continues, with death from above, death from below and death from inside. Old Friends
Things get off to a bad start right away with Lincoln (Joe Anderson) and Lena (Eloise Mumford) playing a little duet with a conveniently placed guitar and accordion. This is thankfully interrupted by Jahel (Paulina Gaitan) spotting a corpse hanging in a tree. If I was on that boat, I'd want to join him. Who brings an accordion on a boat?
Dead Man Walking
The corpse turns out to not be a corpse -- it's Cole's cameraman Jonas (Scott Michael Foster), who is suffering from a case of malaria. After cutting him down, we see his last tape, the funeral rites of some jungle elders. And then things start to go bad, with a rain of dead birds falling from the sky. I wonder if there's something supernatural in the jungle that the crew's pissed off... again.
In the Cards
Guess who knows why all this crazy stuff is happening? If you guessed Jahel, give yourself a gold star. Jonas is cursed by El Colgado, the Hanging Man, for filming those funeral rites. He lies to Lincoln about why he's out there alone, but seems not to realize that he's been missing for months. A swarm of locusts hits the boat, with half the crew agitating to throw Jonas overboard. I'm with them!< p> Groundhog Day
Jonas is cursed to repeat death over and over but never know peace because he stole the soul of a dead man. He does give us some useful information on exactly what Emmet was looking for, and we've heard it before: the Source. He then tries to hang himself to save the ship. The spirits melt his phone, Jonas survives to join the crew, and we're done with another episode.
Can we have an episode of The River where Jahel doesn't know what's happening? How useless was Lincoln this episode? Do you think the Source is anything like the glowing cave from Lost? Or something even dumber? Best Lines:
"The problem isn't just that we don't have a lead. It's that we don't have a leader."
--Clark on the future of the mission.
"Death means dignity. Not ambition."
--Dr. Cole chides Jonas for wanting to film the funeral.
"If Jonas doesn't leave, we all suffer."
--Jahel fears El Colgado.
"I don't know what's possible anymore. All I know is that when that girl gets scared, I listen."
--Clark (Paul Blackthorne) is starting to realize that Jahel is worth listening to.
"It will kill us all to get him."
--Tess (Leslie Hope) wants to get Jonas off the ship.
