GCB stages a church musical and it goes completely bonkers.
Musical Wars
Last week, GCB reached a humble series high point by dialing back the cattiness and focusing on its characters. This week, it's not so much good or bad as it is completely nuts. Amanda and the pastor are hanging out now, apparently -- these perfect Aryans have to stick together, after all -- when the pastor reveals he's a little jealous of another pastor across town. Eager to turn any and every passing emotion into a driven social spectacle, Amanda vows to upstage the rival church's production of Godspell with a brand new, high-budget, original music production.
Drop the Beat, Ripp
To achieve this, Amanda directs a play about Jesus written by Heather in high school -- as a former cheerleader, Amanda is obviously qualified to manage a large-scale theatrical production. She holds open auditions for the part of the Holy Spirit, pitting Carlene and Cricket against each other for the lead. Naturally, Carlene interrupts Cricket's audition, rapping a verse of "This Little Light of Mine" while Ripp holds a boom box. Apparently, Amanda is impressed; Carlene gets the part.
Up in the Air
Unfortunately, nobody is any good at this stuff. Carlene divides her time between stepping on Jesus' lines and flapping her arms like a big Texan toucan, while Cricket finagles a deal to replace her. Roles are switched -- Carlene rewrites the play to be about a leper; it gets complicated. Amanda gleefully jumps at this opportunity to revert to her high school bitchy core; everyone drops out and leaves.
Down in the Mud
Because this makes Amanda feel sad, she realizes that she must have done something wrong. She offers Cricket and Carlene the opportunity to throw mud on her, which they happily accept. Everyone's friends again, and Ripp directs the musical himself, starring as Jesus. Everyone lives happily ever after.
So what can be said about an episode like this? Well ... I will say that it was consistently funny throughout. Absurd, mostly pretty stupid, but undeniably funny: I laughed out loud multiple times, and honestly, what more can a show like this ask for? Whether or not GCB can sustain itself on this level of wackiness remains to be seen, but for tonight, this dumb, ridiculous episode managed to keep me smiling.
