Staying Strong: Suburgatory (ABC)

Some shows break the tension with comedy, Suburgatory breaks the comedy with tension -- but it works. Such is the life of a teen who tries to take real problems and cloak them with jokes. In Season 2, Tessa (Jane Levy) continues to wryly dissect suburbia, even if certain elements of her character are a bit cliché. At the risk of oversimplifying things a bit, Suburgatory is one of those shows that just works.

New Character, Eden, Creates a Garden of Confusion

There's a wonderful new development on Suburgatory tonight and it's multi-fold. Noah's and Jill's surrogate turns out to be the same lady for which George has major romantic feelings. This all wraps up the plot nicely while letting the characters all um, grow, at the same time! I also liked Dallas' missing dog storyline since the little precious gets found in the end, complete with a new wardrobe!

On the Market

George meets a pretty health food nut at the farmer's market. They are just too cute together and it's nice to see George have some romantic chemistry with someone for a change. The girl, appropriately named "Eden," as she eats all kinds of unusual garden crops such as "squash blossoms," looks sweet as she holds hands with George. The only trouble is, she turns out to also be Noah's and Jill's surrogate. What a fun plot twist!

A Bun in a Different Oven

George had thought that Jill and Noah were going to announce that Jill is pregnant. Before they can explain though, George gives Jill an unintended insult by telling her that she only looks a little pregnant! Watch your hand near Jill's fork, George!

The word travels fast and even young AJ tries to advise George on what to do. He says George isn't the first to have a bird with another man's egg in her nest. Talk about being out of the mouths of babes, or what? Noah freaks out that George is dating his surrogate and orders him not to have sex with Eden until after the baby is born. George is just like "whatever" and MYOB.

Tessa the Pet Detective

Dallas is freaking out and hyperventilating because her little white fluff ball of a dog, Yakult, is missing. George and Tessa try to calm Dallas down. Dalia is too stupid to be any help as she tells her posse of dumb blondes to "brainstorm" where the dog could be even though Dalia turns out to be the cause of the problem. Tessa comes up with the idea to watch Dallas' camera tape and it shows dum dum Dalia sweeping the dog outside with a broom.

The Dog Has More Clothes Than I Do

Tessa wants Mr. Wolfe to make an announcement about the missing dog to the school body, but it turns out that the canine Mr. Wolfe and his boyfriend took in is Yakult. Dalia and Tessa chase down Mr. Wolfe running with the dog and finally get Yakult home, complete with a large wardrobe of cute little doggie outfits. I laugh when Tessa tells Dallas that Yakult was "living as a gay male dog in East Chatswin."

At the end of the show, George and Eden still decide to keep seeing each other even though she'll be showing soon and he seems to break out in allergies to all of her natural food choices. This new coupling should make for some highly watchable Suburgatory episodes, especially since Noah and Jill are supposedly going to be parents to the baby, don't you think?
