The Dark Knight Rises (opening July 20)
The Details: Normally, the second trailer of a blockbuster film spins a little more of the story than was revealed in the short teaser trailer that preceded it, but director Christopher Nolan hates giving away too much too soon. So the second trailer for The Dark Knight Rises (rated PG-13) includes only a brief sequence featuring star Christian Bale in the iconic suit, and none of Anne Hathaway in her Catwoman getup. You do get to see Tom Hardy as Bane, but I've watched this trailer half a dozen times and I can't understand a word he says. There's only a couple fleeting shots of Joseph Gordon-Leavitt's new character as well.
The Trailer: Well, there's a set piece taking place at a major football game, complete with a small child singing the national anthem and a really cool scene of a running back racing for a touchdown while the field behind him collapses into a massive sinkhole. Nolan also gives a hint to the film's political subtext when Hathaway's Serena whispers to Bruce Wayne at a society ball, "You're all going to wonder how you ever thought you could live so large, and leave so little for the rest of us." Occupy Gotham?
The Buzz: Oh, c'mon. Nolan could release a trailer of nothing but Bale berating a crew member for walking through his eye line and we'd still all go see this movie. But perhaps trailer #3, due to be released with prints of The Avengers on May 4, will have some more details. Don't bet on it, though.
