Sweet, Sad Love Triangle
My favorite film at Tribeca so far is Take This Waltz, actor-turned-director Sarah Polley's follow-up to her superb debut, the Oscar-nominated Away From Her. Her new one is about Margot (the redoubtable Michelle Williams), who meets and flirts with Daniel (Luke Kirby) while traveling for work, but has to let him know she's married when he turns out to live across the street. Seth Rogen plays her husband, and Sarah Silverman is very good as Margot's alcoholic sister-in-law. Polley doesn't aim for realism. It's a stylized, visually rich character-driven drama that captures emotional truths about romance with wit and insight. It's opening theatrically in June, and it's worth seeking out.
