While its third episode doesn't exactly bring any surprises, Girls stays strong with hilarious one-liners and spot-on performances.
Hannah's Pre-Cancer
After goth-ing herself out in black eyeliner and dark clothes, much to the always unsettling pleasure of Adam (Adam Sackler), Hannah (Lena Dunham) finds out that she has HPV. But she's fairly sure she didn't get it from Adam, which means that our post-grad heroine must confront her ex-boyfriend Elijah (The Book of Mormon's Andrew Rannells) to get to the bottom of the situation. In case you're wondering, no, this does not go well.
Adventures in Babysitting
Jessa (Jemima Kirke) lands a babysitting gig -- who else recognized the fantastic Kathryn Hahn as the mother? -- that goes surprisingly well. She listens to the little girl read her 10-page novel, passes out on the couch and wakes up just in time to smoke pot and flirt with the father. Judging by the "next on" bit, however, it doesn't look like Jessa will keep the gig for long -- she apparently loses the kids at the park!
The Vulgar Visual Artist
While working at the gallery, Marnie (Allison Williams) stumbles upon a charming and successful artist named Jonathan who is just different enough from her clingy boyfriend Charlie (Christopher Abbott). Sexual tension builds, Jonathan drops a shockingly forward gesture (see the quotes below) and Marnie is left alone to... how shall I put this... "take care of" the tension on her own. Anyone not see where this plot thread is leading?
Reality vs. Hannah
Hannah and Elijah spend roughly 37 seconds of casual catching up before Elijah drops a bomb: He's gay! And not only is he gay now, but he fantasized about men during their two-year relationship. Oh, and he compliments Hannah on her "handsomeness" and lets her know that she inspired him to realize his homosexuality. With a less capable actress this scene could have come across like a cheesy rom-com, but Dunham's raw emotional performance really communicates the sheer embarrassment of the situation.
The episode's final moments of Hannah and Marnie boogying to Robyn's "Dancing On My Own" cemented the show's funny-yet-authentic style. Now that we're three episodes in, will you stick around to see if Hannah ever finds a job?
