Ai To Makoto (Directed by Takashi Miike)

Japanese director Takashi Miike may be best known to western audiences for his flagrantly violent horror films, but the prolific director is comfortable in a wide variety of styles. The bloodthirsty crowd will be in for a different kind of shock when they see Ai To Makoto, a high school romance based on a popular manga of the early 1970s. Good girl Ai (Emi Takei) falls for delinquent Makoto (Satoshi Tsumabuki), but their love becomes dangerous due to Makoto's feuds with other local toughs. There's a few fistfights and a tense hostage situation, but Miike fanboys shouldn't expect the ironic gore the director is famous for: this is more like Quentin Tarantino directing an episode of The Secret Life of the American Teenager.
