Staying Strong: Suburgatory (ABC)

Some shows break the tension with comedy, Suburgatory breaks the comedy with tension -- but it works. Such is the life of a teen who tries to take real problems and cloak them with jokes. In Season 2, Tessa (Jane Levy) continues to wryly dissect suburbia, even if certain elements of her character are a bit cliché. At the risk of oversimplifying things a bit, Suburgatory is one of those shows that just works.

Someone Get That Fetus Some Earplugs

I'm still loving these Suburgatory episodes with George dating Noah's and Jill's surrogate, Eden. Alicia Silverstone is perfect as health food-eating Eden as long as ABC doesn't decide to show her feeding Noah's and Jill's baby like the actress feeds her real life kid -- mother bird style! I liked that the show was funny tonight, but also showed the surrogate situation being far from perfect. There is so much arguing from the group in the ultrasound room, the doctor said the fetus was covering his ears with his little hands!

Do This, Don't Do That

Noah is a nervous nerd. He doesn't even want poor Eden to eat any pepper in case it might bother the baby. Noah's biggest problem is still George wanting to date Eden though. He doesn't want them to have sex even though Eden's doctor says it's actually a good thing for a pregnant woman. Noah goes as far as to pester George to sign a contract saying he won't have sex with Eden while she's pregnant with Noah's and Jill's baby. Eden can't take it any more and neither can I, except that Alan Tudyk, who plays Noah, is such a darned good actor he makes the insanity watchable!

Am I Adopted?

Sheila is driving Jill bonkers as she keeps warning her that as soon as Eden gives birth, she's going to be all over Jill's husband, Noah. Well, Sheila is always a crack pot and besides, Eden seems pretty much into George. Since Sheila is making such a big deal about the whole surrogate pregnancy, this prompts Lisa to somehow think her parents had prior experience with a surrogate and she is adopted. Malik tries to reason with Lisa, but she persists in her theory.

Work and Shop 'Til You Drop

Tessa is upset that she hasn't even met Eden yet and George is spending so much time with the woman. Throwing herself into working full time and then some at Dallas' store, Tessa tries to forget about spending more time with George. George does try to go to a movie with her and does introduce Tessa to Eden finally. Tessa shops a lot and dresses a lot like Dallas. When I see them in nearly-matching white chiffon, one shoulder, sparkly dresses I cringe because one of these is quite enough on the eyes!

Ultrasound Off

After Jill gets a painter to paint her "pregnancy portrait" even though she's not pregnant, she, Noah, George and Tessa are in the medical room with Eden for the ultrasound. They all end up arguing - mostly Noah with his anti-sex objections despite the doctor's orders to the contrary.

The doctor hushes them all up by telling them to look at the image of the fetus covering his hands over his ears!

Afterward, Eden says for the health of the baby, she has to move back to Montana, but George persuades Eden to move in with him and Tessa. Of course, Tessa is not impressed!

Sleep Study

This week's Suburgatory starts to wrap up with Lisa sneaking into her mom's bedroom after Lisa found and watched a video showing her parents making a plea to a surrogate. Sheila is snoring with her mouth open and Lisa does a swab! Guess we'll have to wait for the results until the next episode!

What do you think about this week's Suburgatory?
