Along with all those glamor-filled reality romps like Real Housewives, their not so glamorous cousins are stompin' right to the top of the ratings too. Toothless, mulleted and bearded persons unite! I can watch them! (Just please, I beg of you, no pony tails in your beards cuz that's where I draw the line!)
Here are some of my favorites in redneck reality TV:
Hillbilly Hand Fishin'
Animal Planet was never the same again after they debuted this show, but it was a surprise hit! Hillbilly Hand Fishin' received 40% higher ratings that the average of any other show in its time slot. The show focuses on the Bivins family who operate Big Fish Adventures in Temple, Oklahoma. Skipper Bivins and his brother, Scooter, keep the noodling going strong. No, noodling isn't like canoodling -- it's nothin' dirty, y'all, it just means the act of catchin' catfish with yer bare hands - and even yer bare feet!
Duck Dynasty
This show is kind of like what would happen if The Beverly Hillbillies' Clampetts stayed in the sticks and built their mansion there. I think, instead of Duck Dynasty, a better title for this show would be The Bayou Hillbillies. This down home, Louisiana bayou family combines living in a mansion with making duck calls out of salvaged swamp wood. Yeah, and they may look like scraggly-bearded bumpkins, but these folks are multi-millionaires doncha know..
Billy the Exterminator
You won't find anyone with more energy and enthusiasm for pest control than Billy and his brother, Ricky. Billy has a blond, spiky mullet and tiny black sunglasses. Ricky has even blonder hair and even tinier black sunglasses. Bees, bugs, racoons, spiders, gators and snakes - these guys can get rid of any pesty problem and usually end up relocating the offending critters to boot. It's fun to see Billy get out of Louisiana and tackle the big street rats of Chicago too!
Teen Mom's Butch and April Baltierra
Mulleted Butch, who seems to be in jail more often that not, is teen Tyler's dad and sunken-cheeked April, who may be toothless but never smiles so I can't tell, is Catelynn's mom. Tyler and Catelynn are sweet teens who gave their baby up for adoption to really give her a better life. April and Butch, who have Coca Cola art all over their walls, have a tough time with it and can't seem to get over it too well. Tyler and Catelynn are the mature ones in this family!
