An Enticing Apple Takes Two Characters Out

Magic in Storybrooke?

We last left Emma as she was pretty much abducting Henry out of Storybrooke. Well, that doesn't happen because Henry will not let it happen. So back to Storybrooke.

Regina has a dream that everyone she's hurt gets together to kill her. So she wants to take out Emma. She gets shot down by Mr. Gold, who reminds her that she can't actually kill Emma because then the curse will be broken. Interesting -- and something we haven't been told before. So Regina just has to get rid of her.

Regina turns to an old friend -- Jefferson, aka the Mad Hatter -- for one final magic trick.

Coming to the Rescue

In fairy tale land, we're back to Snow White, the Evil Queen and Prince Charming. Charming is about to get his head chopped off for not going through with his arranged marriage. He's saved at the last second by ... Regina? She wants him for her own magical misery -- to use him to get rid of Snow once and for all.

With Charming locked up, Snow assembles her army -- the dwarves, Red and Granny -- to take on all the Queen's men and rescue Charming. They take down the men with a serious sword fight, but then they all get right back up like they weren't just stabbed. But no need to worry, the Blue Fairy and the rest of her tiny flying friends throw some fairy dust and -- poof! -- all dead.

That scene is one of the very few times I thought the whole thing was a little over the top and not that all believable. Sure, the show is about a fairy tale, so certain elements will obviously feel as such, but the show had done a really great job in making all the characters look realistic. When all the fairy godmothers fly in together and save the day? Not so much.

But back to Charming. He's not where Snow is led to believe! The Evil Queen has him in her castle, and Snow can only talk to him and see him briefly through a glass casing.

The Line Between Two Worlds

Jefferson makes a deal with Regina because she promises to make him forget about his daughter, who's living her life not knowing who her "Mad Hatter" father is. Regina leads Jefferson to her little secret dungeon of hidden magic. She believes she can conjure magic from magic to work the magic hat. At first it doesn't work, but when Regina tosses her little pearl with Daniel's face -- her love from the other world, the reason she hates Snow -- Jefferson makes Regina think back to an object he grab from the other world to bring back to Storybrooke.

Snow White's Fall

The Evil Queen sets up a meeting with Emma, telling her to come alone and without weapons. While all of her friends tell her not to go, Snow does. The Evil Queen entices Snow with a a shiny red apple, which she's told she needs to take willingly to save Charming's life. Otherwise, he will die.

Snow takes it, and collapses. And that is when Jefferson "reaches" into the fairy tale world to get the apple.

Will Henry Finally Make Emma Believe?

Regina bakes her famous apple turnover to give to Emma, which she does easily because Emma comes to her house saying she's going to leave Storybrooke for Henry's sake.

Back at her house, Emma is getting ready to say goodbye to a confused Henry, who notices the sweet dessert in the kitchen. When he explains what it is and what it's for, Emma of course doesn't believe it. Henry then sacrifices himself by eating the apple turnover -- and collapses just like Snow did.
