With our first look at the almost-polished Bombshell this week, we saw some promising scenes. But the various makeups and breakups on this week's Smash overshadowed opening night.
You Made Your Bed
The episode opens with the scene we have all been dreading: Dev (Raza Jaffrey) wakes up next to Ivy (Megan Hilty), and just in time for a phone call from Jessica (Savannah Wise) on Karen (Katharine McPhee)'s phone. This random mistake came way out of left field and ruins the little bit of Anglophile love I had left for Dev, but seeing a little remorse out of Ivy did make it worth it. But then she agrees to marry him?! Will he find the ring?!
Mrs. Houston Goes to Boston
With her husband, Frank (Brian d'Arcy James), and son, Leo (Emory Cohen), in tow, Julia (Debra Messing) arrives just in time for the first preview and to yell at Tom (Christian Borle) about the return of Michael Swift (Will Chase). Seeing them fight is like a sad scene from Will & Grace. Luckily, their breakup only lasted a commercial break.
On With the Show, Maybe
While spilling to Karen about starlets always having up-and-comers nipping at their heels, Rebecca (Uma Thurman) suffers an allergic reaction to that green sludge she drinks. Her assistant immediately suspects the peanut slip was deliberate. My mind went right to Ellis (Jaime Cepero). He blamed Rebecca for the poor preview and there seems to be no end to his confusing deception. He is more annoying twerp than villain.
Why Aren't They Clapping?
Bombshell finally opened for previews in Boston and the response was less than great. The death scene was just plain uncomfortable and Eileen (Anjelica Huston) demands a rewrite. Naturally, the cast holds vigil at the church of Sam (Leslie Odom Jr.), who has a beautiful voice and fits nicely into the role of moral compass.
Rebecca drops her own bombshell and tells Karen she is leaving the show. The season finale will hopefully mean curtains for some characters and reveal if the nice girl can finish first.
