The summer movie season kicked off in earnest last weekend, with The Avengers scoring the highest-grossing opening weekend of all time. So let's have a look at which trailers are doing the best job of making us excited to hit the theaters.
The Watch (opening July 27)
The Details: Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn, Jonah Hill and British comedian Richard Ayoade (star of UK cult sitcom The IT Crowd) are four bored suburban dads who form a neighborhood watch team as a front for spending their nights hanging out and drinking beer. But when they inadvertently uncover an alien invasion, the hapless wannabes must save their subdivision. Akiva Schaffer, one-third of the comedy trio The Lonely Island, directed, from a script co-written by Superbad's Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg and actor Justin Theroux.
The Trailer: The film's first teaser trailer made no mention of the alien-invasion plot, but the recent shooting of unarmed teenager Trayvon Martin by self-appointed neighborhood watch captain George Zimmerman caused the studio to both change the name of the film and spoil the mid-movie twist. But the newly-released red-band trailer mostly sticks to scenes of the principals talking dirty amongst themselves and then blowing things up with an abandoned alien weapon they stumble upon.
What's the Buzz: I gotta say, I had been looking forward to this movie, but frankly, this trailer pretty much made me lose interest in seeing it. Stiller, Vaughn and Hill are all in petulant tough-guy mode, which gets tiresome fast. It's hard to tell about Ayoade because he's barely present in the trailer, as if they want to mask the fact that one of the principals has a British accent. Honestly, it just doesn't look that funny, or that scary.
