Hope Springs (opening August 10)
The Details: Meryl Streep is a bored housewife of a certain age, with Tommy Lee Jones as her grumpy (surprise!) husband. On an impulse, she signs the two of them up for a week-long couples therapy course with prominent therapist Steve Carell. Romance is rekindled. (Again, surprise!) David Frankel, who helmed Streep's star turn in The Devil Wears Prada, directs.
The Trailer: Awkward sex jokes (including an admittedly rather funny shot of Streep eating a banana) are, as always in this sort of film, interspersed with emotional scenes overlaid with pleasant adult-contemporary pop songs. In other words, you've seen this all before, but at least it's got Meryl.
What's the Buzz: Basically, this is the film that middle-aged women will go to while their husbands are all in the next theater over watching The Expendables 2. I'm sure it's even meant to appeal to anyone else.
