Staying Strong: Suburgatory (ABC)

Some shows break the tension with comedy, Suburgatory breaks the comedy with tension -- but it works. Such is the life of a teen who tries to take real problems and cloak them with jokes. In Season 2, Tessa (Jane Levy) continues to wryly dissect suburbia, even if certain elements of her character are a bit cliché. At the risk of oversimplifying things a bit, Suburgatory is one of those shows that just works.

The finale episode was pretty entertaining even though it left me wanting more -- more story, more about what happens next -- but I guess that was its intent. This finale Suburgatory episode, "Motherlode," tied all of the storylines into the motherhood theme in one form or other, so I loved that.

Can't Hardly Wait

Tessa is weeks away from her due date to pop out Noah and Jill's baby. So far, George and Eden have stayed true to the (stupid) pact they made with Noah about not having sex until after the baby is born. But, Eden just feels so "pent up" that she complains to George about it. Eden entices George to give in and go for it, but in bed, George can't do anything. He assures Eden it's not because of how she looks, but because of his promise to Noah. Either way, Eden isn't happy.

Some Mother's Day

Well, it's official - Dalia is more than just spoiled, she's so self-centered that she's cruel. Rather than spending Mother's Day in Israel with her mom, Dallas, Dalia decides to give Dallas' ticket to her father and go with him instead. Tessa feels sorry for Dallas and tries to make up for Dalia's snub. After all, Tessa has no mother in her life as hers ran out on Tessa and George.

Bizarre Baby Shower

The Werner's baby shower looks like a Vegas show gone wrong. Performers are painted in animal print patterns and are put in cages. Eden, basically a vegan, hates the animal theme. When she sees the room the Werner's decorated for the baby though, she just freaks out and starts yelling about what kind of people they must be. There are stuffed animal heads on the wall and Eden doesn't find it as funny as I do. Eden's tantrum sends her into early labor and she's rushed to the hospital.

Moms on the Run

Chatswin is having a running race for moms on Mother's Day. Sheila has her family involved as her pit crew with water cups and everything. She's even stored some of her blood in the downstairs freezer just in case. Lisa's eyes light up at hearing this as she's still obsessed with the idea that she's adopted. Lisa received a reply back from her DNA test that she's not adopted but because of finding the video tape of her parents' making a plea for a baby, she still thinks she must be.

Dalia, wearing her hideous gold running boots, hurts her foot during the run and ends up in the hospital. While drugged up, she imagines that her dog is talking to her about not giving up on her relationship with Dallas. We get to see the visual of Yakult's mouth moving and hear Whoopi Goldberg's voice which is pretty weird and funny at the same time. Tessa gets her feelings hurt when she visits Dallas in her hospital room, but Dallas only has Dalia on the brain.

Sheila's Secrets

After the run, Fred brings out James Ingram, who he thinks is Sheila's favorite soul singer. Well, he is, but Sheila has to fess up that she and James used to date, so now it's an uncomfortable situation. Meanwhile, Lisa used her mom's blood from the freezer to conduct more experiments. She has the whole family's blood types somehow and while hers is compatible with her mother and father's, Lisa gets a big shock to find out that Ryan's is not. It's a nice twist to have her brother be the adopted one instead of Lisa.

All Roads Out of Chatswin

After being hurt by not having a mother around on Mother's Day, Tessa goes for a drive. It's touching to see her cry about the mother issue and it adds depth to her character. She doesn't see her mother, but her mother's mother. When Tessa meets her maternal grandmother, the show ends with Tessa seeing this as an opportunity to get out of Chatswin.

Did you like the finale of Suburgatory? Do you hope Tessa gets to resolve things with her mother next season?
