Things got mighty apocalyptic on this week's episode of Wilfred, with the titular character (Jason Gann) making some strange predictions and following through on them. A truly bizarre episode; our recounting is below.
You What Me?
Things have gotten pretty serious for Ryan (Elijah Wood) and Amanda (Allison Mack). As the episode opens, Ryan tells Amanda that he loves her -- and after she wavers a bit, she reciprocates the sentiment. This leads to Ryan suggesting that Amanda move in with him, which she happily agrees to. But when Ryan begins to make the preparations, Wilfred tells Ryan that apocalyptic events are brewing.
Earthquake Time
Shortly after Wilfred's prediction, those strange events start to occur. An earthquake hits, trapping Ryan underneath a bookcase -- luckily, Wilfred's maybe-imaginary-frenemy Bruce (Dwight Yoakam) shows up, freeing Ryan. This leads to the oddest part of the episode, with Ryan and Bruce squaring off in strange contests so that Ryan might win information from Bruce regarding Amanda's true nature. However, when Ryan "wins" the competition, all he wins is a clock showing him how long he's been in the basement, procrastinating getting the apartment ready for Amanda.
Uh Oh, You're a Jerk
As Amanda arrives with her things, Ryan exits the basement just in time. However, as she's starting to move her stuff in, Ryan tells her that he's not ready for "this." Upon probing, he explains that "this" is their relationship -- and he breaks up with her. Amanda, heartbroken, leaves Ryan's place in tears.
What a Strange Episode
This was definitely one of the most gutsy and aggressive episodes we've seen on this program. Wilfred has always been a proudly oddball show, but some of the funny games Ryan plays with Bruce in this episode are just wild. What the episode really staked out is that the show's writers are willing to take the content to dark, strange places without fear. Elijah Wood's oddly expressive face is just the right choice to anchor the show, and his bewildered, beguiling performance really anchored the episode.
Well, that's it for this exceedingly original episode, folks. What were your feelings? How did you feel about the competition between Ryan and Bruce?
