While turkeys are known as the entree de jour for the holidays, they are not known for being especially bright birds. That may be the reason why the word “turkey” has become synonymous with disasters from the Winger reunion tour to any Steven Seagal movie made after 1989. But there are plenty of birds around who are not lame ducks in our nation’s history.

Here are five famous ‘birds’ we couldn’t live without:

Larry Bird (Basketball)

When you put together a list of the best pro basketball players ever, power forward Larry Bird has to be near the top of the list. Drafted by the Boston Celtics in 1978, Bird was a 12-time NBA All-Star and a member of the 1992 Summer Olympics Dream Team that famously won a gold medal in Barcelona. A member of the NBA Hall of Fame, after he retired he coached the Indiana Pacers and moved into the team’s front office where he worked until 2012. He’s one of few players who was as successful off the court as he was on it. In fact he’s the only person in NBA history to be named Most Valuable Player, Coach of the Year and Executive of the Year.
