Whitney told her friends that Alex isn't a millionaire. This has caused immediate relationship stress. Even though Alex tried to assure Whitney he wasn't poor, she continued to act as if he was. Things took a turn for the worse when the couple went out to dinner with friends who wouldn't let Alex pay for the check. Meanwhile, Mark bought a bar and then panics because he isn't sure how to run it effectively.
Whitney stars Whitney Cummings as Whitney and Chris D'Elia as Alex and airs on NBC Wednesdays at 8 pm ET.
Mark Quits the Police Force and Opens a Bar
Mark (Dan O’Brien) is in love with Roxanne (Rhea Seehorn) and that brings a lot of tension as Roxanne doesn't have the same feelings. Mark announced that he has quit the police force and opened the bar his father used to take him to when he was on the force. Whitney was the only one excited about Mark's passion and willingness to follow his dreams. Though Mark was scared that he might not be able to run the bar effectively, he was off to a good start.
He did break down and confide in Lily (Zoe Lister-Jones) that he was so terrified of the change that he had a dream the bar ate him. Lily provided a supportive, listening ear as she deals with her own issues. Lily is still living with Roxanne and doesn't have a penny to her name.
Lily was surprised to discover that Mark didn't set up wireless in the bar. He said he wanted the bar to be like Cheers and encourage conversation between the patrons.
Whitney is Shocked to Learn Alex isn't a Millionaire
Whitney is broke and agreed to open a joint account with Alex. When she saw how much money was in his account, she freaked out. Alex sold his website and Whitney thought this meant he would be a millionaire. The show never said exactly how much money Alex had in the bank, but when Whitney accused him of being poor he said, "I'm not poor. You're poor. We're middle class."
Even though Alex tried to reassure Whitney they were financially set, she continued to panic and then decided to take matters into her own hands. Whitney's solution was to cut back on everything in order to save money. Alex becomes very upset with Whitney's attitude.
Alex Spends Money Like He's Rolling in Millions
Whitney's panic over her money situation with Alex caused serious trust issues. Alex felt that her distrust in his ability to provide for their future meant she didn't have faith in him as a provider. He also became upset that Whitney didn't think he was working. To prove his point, he began spending money on extravagant junk. Alex hired a cleaning lady, dined on sushi and dropped $800 on a photo after Whitney told him how worthless it was. Alex was also upset that Whitney supported Mark when he quit his job as a cop to open a bar, yet couldn't support him. Whitney stated that she wasn't planning to spend the rest of her life with Mark, therefore it was easy to support him.
After Whitney realized her error, she apologized to Alex and vowed in humorous fashion that she was likely to make the same mistakes again.
