Now that 666 Park Avenue has been canceled by ABC, we only have a small window of opportunity to find out what The Drake building really is. In this episode some answers come to the surface. Jane emerged in Times Square after entering through the Drake's mosaic and walking down the spiral staircase. As she was dazed and oblivious to her whereabouts, she was taken to a local psychiatric hospital for observation. Things between Gavin and Shaw heated up and Gavin played the ultimate move hoping to retrieve the red box.
Has Jane Gone Mad?
It's hard to tell what is real or imagined in 666 Park Avenue, and maybe one of the reasons why the show has been cancelled is due to the fact the writers continually leave us guessing. It's the eighth episode of the series and we still have no idea who or what Gavin Doran is. I mean, we know he is the show's main antagonist, but is he the devil? Is he someone involved in witchcraft or the occult? Has the vagueness of the show's plot helped lead to its demise?
Well, one thing we are sure of is that Jane appears out of her mind. Exactly what she discovered during her descent down the spiral staircase remains hidden from viewers, but at least we know she emerged, right? With only five episodes before the show is off the air completely, I fear we may never find out where Jane was, who Gavin Doran is or why the Drake holds the power that it does.
It appears that Henry is losing all faith in his wife's sanity. Henry has never held much stock in Jane's visions or dreams, and it appears he is perfectly content leaving her in a locked, psychiatric facility. Henry reminded Jane that mental illness runs in her family. Fortunately for Jane, her good friend the cop came to her rescue and got her out. When Jane returned home she found Henry's engagement ring. The only question now is whether Henry still wants to marry her.
Is Gavin Doran the Devil?
While I would be shocked to think the writers of the show might feel they have successfully portrayed Gavin Doran as the devil, I think this may be the case. Tonight, Gavin Doran went into a church and demanded the red box. The background music was from The Rolling Stones and featured the song Sympathy for the Devil. At one point, the priest said to Doran that he was told he couldn't enter the church. Looks like Gavin is the devil after all.
Though we didn't see what transpired, the next scene showed Gavin placing the red box back in his safe.
Shaw Tells Olivia Sasha is Alive
Gavin believes Sasha died in a car accident, while Olivia believes their daughter committed suicide. Olivia confessed to Gavin that she burned the suicide note and told him that Sasha had written mean things about him. Olivia never confided in anyone about Sasha's suicide and was surprised when she learned Shaw knew about it.
Sasha went to the basement to confront Shaw, when he convinced her to let him go in order to reunite her with her daughter. After Gavin retrieved the red box, he and Kandinsky planned to get rid of Shaw. When they arrived in the basement, Shaw was gone.
Whoopi Goldberg as Maris Elder
Tonight introduced a new character to the show, played by none other than Whoopi Goldberg. After knowing of the show's cancellation, I wonder if tonight's episode wasn't better than what has been served for the past month. There was a bit more suspense and I thought the psychiatric hospital scenes were more intense than the usual fare. With Whoopi's addition to the cast, it is possible the show may see a boost in ratings. Unfortunately, that boost is a little late.
