With eleven episodes down and two to go, tonight's spell-binding American Horror Story episode keeps us right on the edge of our seats as Lana (Sarah Paulson) and Kit (Evan Peters) finally make it out of Briarcliff and their releases bring some big surprises. It's also evident that Briarcliff, as an institution, is on a downward spiral and Monsignor Howard (Joseph Fiennes) goes to extreme lengths to keep Jude silent about some of the scandalous events that took place while Lana was improperly held there.
American Horror Story starring Jessica Lange and Zachary Quinto airs on FX Wednesdays at 10:00 pm ET.
A Family Reunited, Then Torn Apart
A very smug and creepy Thredson (Zachary Quinto) takes Kit to see Grace and his son. Grace names him Thomas, after her grandfather. Kit asks her what the aliens did to her and Alma, and what do they want? We see some very disturbing images of naked Grace screaming while the aliens put the baby inside her.
It's surprising when she tells Kit the aliens aren’t cruel and also “aren’t perfect.” We see Grace floating in water screaming, then a parallel image of Alma floating with her eyes closed and Grace tells Kit Alma’s dead. She advises him he is her and Alma's link, that he's special, their son is special, and will “change the way people think.”
The alien plot still feels totally unclear. What do they want? Why did they choose Kit to begin with?
Kit tells Grace he wants to be a decent father to his son. He proposes and she accepts. Then Monsignor Howard suddenly orders the baby to be taken to a home for lost children and nuns rip him out of Grace’s arms, with Thredson skulking on the sidelines, all too pleased.
You'd think after being crucified, Howard wouldn’t be so quick to inflict pain on others ...
Lana Gets the Last Word
Lana Winters is finally free, with Thredson's confession tape and thus, all the cards. She flashes him the tape through a taxi window and offers a choice hand gesture at his shocked face.
I imagined the collective, "Yes!" shouted 'round the AHS fan world at Lana's triumphant moment. I still wondered, even then, if Thredson would hunt her down and imprison her once again, or kill her. The suspense is terrible, isn’t it?
But this time, Lana is ready and waiting for Thredson – with a gun- when he goes home. She tells him the police have the tape and are on the way to arrest him. This scene is so intense as it's clear by Thredson's eyes that he's calculating a way to take Lana down.
We're cringing as he lights a fire, praying he won't shove her in it. As the police pull up, his eyes dart to a gun on the counter and all we can think is, who is going down first? Thank God Lana shoots him and he drops dead. Yahoo!
Keeping the Silence
The Briarcliff, Lana Winters/Bloody Face Thredson scandal hits the papers and the Monsignor tries desperately to keep everyone silent about the horrors that happened there. Kit blackmails him for Grace's release and to be reunited with their son, in exchange for his silence.
In a very psychologically intense scene, Lana goes for a secret abortion, but flashbacks of the rape and the Bloody Face mask prevent her from following through with it.
She goes to the police with her tell-all book and convinces them to get a court order to talk to Jude to corroborate her claims. We're totally shocked when the Monsignor tells Lana Jude hung herself. She doesn’t believe him and neither do we! Jude is indeed then shown in a dungeon-like cell, curled up praying.
Questions: Will anyone ever find out she's alive? Will she ever make it out alive? Her chances look bleak at best.
Final Shocker
Kit takes Grace and Thomas home to his house, which is still torn up from the night of Alma's abduction. They're alarmed when they see a figure in the bedroom. And we're totally shocked to see Alma turn around, holding a baby of her own.
Did anyone else think, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, in this moment?
Frankly, it's weird and creepy and totally confusing. Are Grace and Alma really aliens, or under some kind of mind control? Can Kit trust either one of them right now? And finally, why did the aliens choose Kit? What is so special about him?
Only two more episodes until all of our burning questions are answered and our pulse rates return to normal ...
