Can Chris find true love? Not if it’s up to friends Emily and Nick, who set him up on progressively more horrific dates. Things aren’t going much better for Gary, who discovers that his father-in-law doesn’t respect him.
Guys With Kids starring Zach Cregger and Jamie-Lynn Sigler airs on NBC Wednesdays at 8:30 pm ET.
The Perfect Opportunity to Bond
Marny’s parents are coming and Gary (Anthony Anderson) is thrilled. Marny’s mom Vivian loves her son-in-law and he can’t wait to see her. Unfortunately she’s not coming this time and Gary isn’t happy. He’s convinced that her dad doesn’t like him. Marny tells Gary his problem is that he’s always hiding behind her mom and that he’s never bothered to connect with him. It’s only five days together, what could possibly go wrong?
Her dad (guest star Ernie Hudson) arrives and while the kids love him, Gary is all nerves. He tries to start a conversation but it sounds like the opening banter from the worst blind date ever. Nick (Zach Cregger) and Chris (Jesse Bradford) both tell Gary he’s nuts and they persuade him to keep trying, but each effort is worse than the last. Nick and Kevin talk to the judge about him and it turns out that he doesn’t like Gary. He tells them that he was a judge for twenty years and his verdict on Gary is that he’s not much of a man.
Chris Looks For Love in All the Wrong Places
Marney loves Gary but she’s also a woman used to getting what she wants. She’s upset when she hears what her father said and wants to set things right – which Gary points out would make him feel like less of a man. Gary argues that if the judge had to watch their four kids, he would understand how hard of a job he has.
Chris tells Nick and Emily (Jamie-Lynn Sigler) he’s having problems finding a date. They argue over who would be a better matchmaker for Chris and it quickly turns into a competition. Each has a candidate and is positive their choice is the right one. They decide to set him up on an identical date with each girl and they’ll discover which person did the better job.
Somehow Nick and Emily Manage to Help and Make Things Worse
Nick and Emily attend both dates and spend most of their time trying to ruin things so they can win the bet between them. Her choice is doing well until she pulls out pictures of her cat at a Renaissance Faire, dressed in a tiny little set of cat armor. She later texts Chris a picture of her pretending to breast feed her cat. Nick’s date choice is going well until Kevin asks her out on a second date and she tells Kevin he’s too hairy for her.
Back at Chris’s they try and convince him to choose which one of the bad dates was the best so they can declare a winner. Marny and Gary leave her father with the four kids for two hours, expecting he’ll crack under the pressure. To help things along, Gary gives his older kids sugar and tells them to act up as much as they want. Of course, when Gary comes back everything is quiet and running smoothly.
Will You Settle For a Bit of Respect?
Gary admits that he tried to ruin things and tells the judge that he knows he doesn’t respect him because he’s a stay-at-home dad. As it turns out, that’s not the reason at all. The judge tells him he doesn’t respect Gary because Gary doesn’t respect him. If he had, he would have asked him for his daughter’s hand before proposing. Later Gary tells his wife what her father said and she’s mad. Gary didn’t ask her father for his permission because she asked him not to do so. She doesn’t believe in father’s giving away the bride. “I’m not some goat,” she argues. Marnie tells her father the truth and he tells Gary that he respects him for not revealing Marny’s wishes. “So you like me now?” asks Gary hopefully. “Let’s just stick with respect,” he replies.
