Last Resort was off for a few weeks for a holiday hiatus before airing the final three episodes of its 13-episode run. The last episode ended with Sam believing his wife Christine had died in an exploding van and Chaplin cutting a deal with the Chinese government to get supplies for the island. Then there’s that messy coup that’s being planned by some factions in Washington D.C.
Last Resort starring Andre Braugher and Daisy Betts airs on ABC Thursdays at 8 pm ET
You Are So Sexy When You Are Spying on Your Fellow Crew Members
Cortez has been revealed as the secret CIA mole and she sends an encoded message asking for instructions. She tells the CIA that Captain Marcus Chaplin (Andre Braugher) has made arrangements with the Chinese and she is told she must kill him immediately. Chaplin tracks down XO Sam Kendal (Scott Speedman) in his tent and asks if he can help following the death of his wife. He tells Sam that the Chinese are sending a supply ship to the island and the U.S. government is sending a destroyer to intercept the ship. He is going to Captain the Colorado and provide protection. Sam is mad and tells Chaplin he’s leaving the crew and that his wife didn’t die so the Captain could become “the king of some third-rate island kingdom.”
It’s Coup Time and No, We’re Not Talking About the Island
Back in Washington there’s a meeting between the Speaker of the House and supporters of the Colorado. They show him the President’s order to have the SEAL’s assassinate the U.N. inspector in Pakistan, which sparked the current war. They’re introduced to one of the SEALs, who carried out the order, and shown his helmet cam footage of the assassination. The plan is for troops under the control of this group to shut down D.C., enforce a no-fly zone and have a Marine unit arrest the president and vice president. They want the Speaker to address the Congress, repeat the facts he’s been shown and take command of the U.S. government. Back on the island Mayor Julian Serrat (Sahr Ngaujah) asks to speak with Sophie (Camille de Pazzis ) and he tells her that she’s wasting her life worrying about Sam. He tells her that once the Americans are gone he will begin mining the island and will be rich. She is his weakness, he tells her, and he is willing to be with her even if she doesn’t love him.
It Isn’t Often That the Term ‘Friendly Fire’ Pops Up While Serving On a Sub
A group of sailors are planning a mutiny and say they are willing to kill Chaplin if needed. Cobb (Robert Patrick) is listening to the conversation and doesn’t say anything until he notices that Sam has entered the room and has been listening. Sam runs off and after he and Cobb fight they call a truce to talk things out. The Captain is on the Colorado and he radios to warn the destroyer away from the supply boat. The destroyer’s Captain tells Chaplin he is under orders to keep the supply ship away from the island at all costs. He also tells Chaplin he believes the Colorado would never fire on another U.S. vessel. Lt. Grace Sheppard (Daisy Betts) and SEAL Officer James King (Daniel Lissing) worry about the consequences of firing on the destroyer and they come up with the idea of removing most of the munitions from a torpedo. That way they could merely damage the destroyer enough to force it back to port. They scramble to alter the torpedo and literally have it finished just as Chaplin prepares to fire a unaltered torpedo. Grace convinces him to fire her version and the destroyer is damaged but not incapacitated. After Chaplin warns them again, they turn away from the supply ship.
Who Can Chaplin Trust? Apparently Only the CIA Spy Sent to Kill Him
Cobb and Sam continue to argue and Cobb tells Sam that the Captain has lost his moral compass. He asks Sam to stay out of the way because “one way or the other this is going to happen.” Back on the Colorado, Cortez is torn between her secret orders and her affection and respect for Chaplin. She visits his quarters and finds him reading the Bible. He stops, looks at her and asks “Did they send you here to kill me?” “Yes,” she replies slowly. She pulls out her gun, pauses and hands it to him. On the island, Sam tells Cobb he’s in, but that Chaplin doesn’t die and he needs to know everything about the plan. At the same time the Mayor visits the Chinese ambassador and tells him the Chinese are backing the wrong person. He reveals the island has a wealth of rare earth elements and an association between the two could be very fruitful. The supply trucks arrive with food and both the villagers and the crew celebrate. Chaplin spots Sam and asks how he’s doing. He asks if Sam will return to active service and Sam agrees. But is he there to help the Captain’s cause or help bring him down?
