Remember when Courtney Love was a successful rock star with a promising film career? Yeah, we barely do, either. These days, she is more known for her public Twitter fights with her apparently estranged daughter, Frances Bean Cobain, than for any accomplishments or contributions to the world. Her latest desperate grab for attention involved mocking the successful marriage of former lover Gavin Rossdale and his wife, Gwen Stefani.
No Doubt Courtney Love is Jealous
Courtney did an interview with ABC News, apparently to promote her new clothing line, during an appearance at a small venue during the Sundance Film Festival. She proceeded to ramble on about Gwen Stefani for a bit, saying that she wouldn’t have believed that Gwen would have developed the L.A.M.B. clothing empire. She further stated that the No Doubt singer’s husband, Bush frontman Gavin Rossdale, “runs the Gwen show” and the clothing line.
She also disparaged Gavin’s musical career, saying that his band “never did that well” and so Gavin was left with plenty of time to manage Gwen’s business. She then intimated that she had chosen not to pursue a romantic future with Gavin during their brief dalliance because she found him boring, and she envisioned that the two of them would have ended up living in France and having affairs with their respective tennis coaches.
First of all, for most women in the world, that doesn’t sound like such a terrible fate. Second, when your chief fashion contribution until now has been a dispute with another female rocker over who popularized the babydoll dress in the early ’90s, maybe you shouldn’t criticize a husband and wife team who have built a hugely successful business. Sadly, these catty remarks have earned Love the most publicity she has received in years, other than her sporadic nasty Twitter encounters with her daughter.
Possible Tour for Courtney Love and Bush?
Apparently Courtney also told the reporter that she would like to tour with Gavin’s reunited band, Bush. It’s unclear why Gavin would want to have his insulting ex tagging along on tour, and Gwen would only prove herself as dim as Courtney thinks if she encouraged the two former lovers to travel together. But anyone who insults a band in one breath and then expresses a desire to join their tour in the next clearly has no concept of social mores.
Courtney also claimed to have a new single due out soon, but she refused to play it during her brief concert for fear that it would be recorded and leaked by her fans. Admittedly, current technology does require an artist to take new precautions, but if she was confident in the tune, one would think that she would want her fans to get a preview to get them excited. Alternatively, it’s possible that she was insecure about her own performance skills, thinking that a live recording wouldn’t live up to the alterations of the recording studio.
What’s Next?
Building a comeback won’t be easy for Courtney Love, as her musical career was always seen as a footnote to that of her deceased husband, Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain. She does claim to be sober these days, which is a good first step towards stability, but trying to climb back into the limelight by nastily name-dropping more successful former friends is just sad. Only time will tell whether Love’s own clothing line and new music will be well-received, but mocking a 10-year marriage isn’t the way to regain her lost fans.
