It's an oddball selection of trailers this week, from a literally dizzying fantasy romance to the not-entirely-warranted 3D reissue of a 1980s smash that has not aged well at all.
Upside Down (opening March 15)
The Details: Two worlds with opposing gravitational fields, Up and Down, are locked together: Up, literally and otherwise, looks down on Down. Adam (Jim Sturgess), a poor but brilliant boy from Down, invents a form of anti-gravity that cancels out the opposing forces. The multinational corporation TransWorld wants his formula, but all he wants is Eden (Kirsten Dunst), an employee he's been in love with since they were children. Juan Diego Solanas wrote and directed.
The Trailer: Okay, seriously, this trailer gave me a headache, both from the vertigo caused by watching people interact while upside-down from each other and from trying to piece together the ridiculously convoluted plot. There are some stunning visuals (of course, Kirsten Dunst is a stunning visual all by herself), but the story is positively barmy. You'll want to watch this twice, and I'm pretty sure you might still be confused.
The Buzz: The audience for this kind of paranormal romance is no doubt large, given the number of people already jonesing for the next Twilight. We'll just see if this is the story they want to see.
