It's a tough gig, but somebody's gotta do it -- this being the prevailing attitude to one of the most daunting tasks in showbiz: hosting the Academy Awards. Over the years, famous actors, singers, talk show hosts and comedians have all attempted the fine balance of entertaining Hollywood insiders along with mainstream America, either succeeding or completely bombing in the process. When it comes to the Oscars, there is no winging it.

This year's contender is potty-mouthed Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane. This seems to be the riskiest move yet on the Academy's part. If MacFarlane's nominee announcement is any indicator, we can expect plenty of pissed off A-list guests and more Hitler jokes in the future. Will he scale back his comedy for the Oscar crowd, or will he go in guns blazing a la Ricky Gervais? Maybe he can use some of his singing and dancing skills to counter any awkward moments.
