Staying Strong: Suburgatory (ABC)

Some shows break the tension with comedy, Suburgatory breaks the comedy with tension -- but it works. Such is the life of a teen who tries to take real problems and cloak them with jokes. In Season 2, Tessa (Jane Levy) continues to wryly dissect suburbia, even if certain elements of her character are a bit cliché. At the risk of oversimplifying things a bit, Suburgatory is one of those shows that just works.

Lisa and Ryan's "Gam Gam" is none other than The Big Chill's Mary Kay Place. Watch as she and famous chef Michael Voltaggio liven up Valentine’s Day in Chatswin.

Suburgatory starring Jane Levy, Jeremy Sisto and Cheryl Hines airs on ABC Wednesdays at 9:30 pm ET.

Malik Channels Smokey Robinson and Shakespeare to Win Lisa Back

Nobody should be alone on Valentine's Day, especially not when the girl of their dreams is only a locker away. Malik (Maestro Harrell) gives it all tonight to try to win back Lisa (Allie Grant). He croons a Smokey Robinson favorite to her in the hall at high school. He dresses up as a Shakespearean troubadour to serenade her from the lawn beneath her window, and when all else fails gets some late-night-in-the-park advice from Sheila (Ana Gasteyer) on how to really win back her daughter. To give that away would be to spoil the best smile of the night for fans of Suburgatory.

Dallas "Blowtox" Backfires

Why would anyone chose "a new injectable derived from the deadly Japan blowfish" to plump up their lips and fill in the laugh lines on their face? Dallas (Cheryl Hines), that's who, and she pays a terrible price as it not only turns her into a frightening monster who looks like the “Elephant Man's baby” but also leads her to break her Valentine's date with George (Jeremy Sisto).

Michael Voltaggio "Lambed it"

Since when is "lambed it" a verb? That's what George asks as he is presented with the fifteenth of 18 courses prepared by Top Chef champion Michael Voltaggio, who appears tonight as Chef Julio, the greatest and most exclusive chef in Chatswin. Not only has he "lambed it" but he keeps on "lambing it" while preparing his bizarre Valentine's menu for George and others willing to pay $600 for the privilege of dinning on dishes heavy on intestines, organs and other bits of animal offal.

Mary Kay Place Can Tango

Much to her chagrin, Sheila watches helplessly as her mother, played by Mary Kay Place, doesn't just waltz but actually tangos in to steal the attentions of Fred (Chris Parnell). First she offers Fred a thick juicy steak instead of Sheila's "skinny breasts" (a reference supposedly to the dinner Sheila has prepared), then dons a sexy red dress to tango with him.

Lisa and Ryan Go to the Movies

What's a better way to spend Valentine's night; drinking beer at a high school "rage" or gorging on caramel corn and gummy bears at an art house cinema? Tessa (Jane Levy) uses the promise of those treats to lure Ryan (Parker Young) to see a pretentious foreign movie - only to discover that while she hates it he not only likes it, but the usually dim Ryan actually gets it! Valentine's Day is sure full of surprises in Chatswin.

Best Lines

"Even though it's a cheesy commercial holiday, I admit having my own doting Valentine felt pretty good." – Tessa

"In tango one doesn’t ask - one takes!" – Fred

"That little coco puff is cuckoo for you!" – Sheila
