Idol hopefuls who didn’t do their homework forget lyrics and it is almost enough to distract from some very strong showings on tonight’s American Idol.
American Idol hosted by Ryan Seacrest airs on FOX Wednesdays and Thursdays at 8:00 pm ET.
Go Your Own Way
Using the cruel but practical lines of 10 format from last week, early favorites Angela Miller, Victoria Acosta, and Mariah Pulice are the first contestants to perform. Angela has a powerful take on Jessie J's "Who You Are" and moves on. Mariachi singer Victoria kills it with an excellent take on Roberta Flack's "Killing Me Softly" and also advances. Sadly the same cannot be said for Mariah, whose cover of Sara Bareilles' "Gravity" that brought her fellow contestants to tears, doesn't make the cut.
Country singers Rachel Hale and Janelle Arthur both leave it all on the stage with their performances, with Rachel's powerful cover of Hank Williams Jr.'s "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" being one of the standouts of the evening. Both women advance.
Candice Glover, who won raves from all four judges during her first audition, stuns with her incredibly soulful take on Christina Aguilera's "Impossible." Megan Miller, who auditioned on crutches to get on the show, gives it her all with David Guetta's "Titanium" (Pitch Perfect fan?) but gets the axe.
Shy New Yorker Isabelle advances to the next round with her seismic take on "Hush, Little Baby" and so does acoustic guitar playing, eccentric Kez Ban despite the fact that an untimely cold renders her singing voice into a painful screech.
Happy Together
Next up is the dreaded group, which again sees the contestants divided into groups assigned by the producers and it's as brutal as it was last week.
The Swaggettes, who are awarded best group name of the night, are a drama free group composed of Kamaria Ousley, Melina Ademi, Denise Jackson, and Candice Glover. They perform a perfectly harmonized version of Blu Cantrell's "Hit ‘Em Up Style (Oops!)." All four extremely talented women advance to the next round.
Almost Famous, a group made up of Savannah Votion, Lizz Weiss, J'Leigh Chauvin, and Daysia Hall try to turn Gotye's "Somebody That I Used to Know" into a girl group song. The gutsy choice leaves Daysia as the only advancing contestant and boy, does self-appointed group leader Savannah take it badly. She bad mouths Daysia something fierce and vows to never appear on the show again.
Handsome Women, a group made up of Shira Gavrielov, Alisha Dixon, Courtney Calle, and Liz Bills butcher Gotye "Somebody That I Used to Know." Of the four, only group outcast Liz makes the cut. The decision does not sit well with Shira who walks back on stage to demand an explanation for her elimination. Randy Jackson bluntly tells her it's because she wasn't that good and that's the story of her.
Don't You Forget About Me
The Dramatics, the most prophetically named group of the night, includes Janel Stinney, Kriss Mincey, and Cristabel Clack. All the women sing well but forget most of the lyrics to The Band Perry's "If I Die Young." Their messy performance seems to be the result of Janel going through a meltdown and not practicing with the group but shockingly they all make it through.
Four You, a group that changes their song choice from Bonnie Tyler's "Total Eclipse of the Heart" to Gotye "Somebody That I Used to Know" predictably forgets many of that song's lyrics and out of Stephanie Schimel, Alex Delaney, Kalli Therinae, and Holly Miller, only Stephanie and Holly makes it.
Last to perform is a group called The Misfits. Made up of Kez Ban, Breanna Steer, Angela Miller, and Janelle Arthur, the group is one of the most contentious of the night. The four women can't decide on a song, have a rocky rehearsal period, and can't find any common ground with Kez. Surprisingly the group keeps it together with a passable cover of The Ronnettes' "Be My Baby" and they all make it through. It's a triumphant moment for the group, but the preliminaries are over tomorrow and the judges will select the top 20 men and women to move on.
