Mindy Kaling is a hugely talented actor, producer, director and writer. However, she might be most known for her role in The Office. Her latest endeavor includes being the creator and star of The Mindy Project. While the series should be television gold because of the recognizable main character and star studded guest appearances, critics and ratings have not been favorable to the show. A few simple suggestions might help to give the show some momentum and attract additional viewers.
The Mindy Project starring Mindy Kaling, Chris Messina and Ed Weeks airs on FOX Tuesdays at 9:30 pm ET.
All In The Family
With Mindy being a successful doctor and her brother attending an Ivy League University, it stands to show that Mindy's parents must be pretty proud. While they might be proud of Mindy's career, they might not be too approving of her lifestyle. An outing with her parents or an extended visit at Mindy's, might make for some amusing storylines. Whether it's open hostility from her parents about her lifestyle or some comical behavior involving her trying to hide her personal life from her parents, introducing some family issues into the show could help to bring interest to the show.
Friend Of The Family
The main theme of the show revolves around Mindy Lahiri (Mindy Kaling) and her attempts at finding love. However, the men they have paired her up with don't seem to be a good match for her. There are undoubtedly some audience viewers that are enthralled in the will-they or won't-they aspect of Mindy's relationship with Danny Castellano (Chris Messina). Yet, even that relationship seems to be an odd pairing and falls flat. Although the show brought in one relationship from Mindy's childhood, it would be interesting if they brought in a friend of the family into the mix. This could be the son of a family friend that shared childhood memories with Mindy but who has grown into his own to become a hot and successful fellow doctor, for example. A great option would be Kal Penn from the Harold & Kumar films. He would add humor to the show, maybe even a long lasting love interest for Mindy, but for sure a little edge where the schtick has become dull.
Domestic Mindy
Mindy seems to always wear outfits that are pulled together in class and designer labels. Mindy's residence is also chic and she has an obviously successful career. However, it's an age old adage that men love a woman that can cook and the way to a man's heart is through his stomach. Introducing some domestic aspects into Mindy's character would give her character some depth and show some dimension, even help deflect some of the predicability the scripts are plagued with now. It would be great to see her cooking some traditional Indian cuisine or hooking up an extravagant meal for a surprised Danny. Even if Mindy isn't domestic, the show could take advantage by depicting Mindy taking some cooking courses or having some chaotic incidents with her weekly maid for contrast.
Make Up Your Mind
There seems to be an abundance of medically-affiliated shows on television, whether it's Grey's Anatomy or Emily Owens, M.D. While the focus of The Mindy Project is supposed to be about finding love and failing at love, some of the storylines in the series include chaos surrounding the OB/GYN office. Audiences can be turned off by a show that lacks a clearly defined identity in its premise. It seems the episodes that were received the best were the ones that took place outside of the office and the issues surrounding healthcare. One suggestion that could help would be to limit the plotlines surrounding the OB/GYN office and focus more on the club excursions, dates or office parties.
Mindy Kaling has had a dynamic career as being the only female writer on The Office before taking the popular role as Kelly Kapoor. She has written, produced and starred in numerous things and has achieved a number of different accolades through the years. However, her latest endeavor in The Mindy Project could use a little help getting off its feet and the right tip might be in implementing just a few small suggestions to the show.
