Can Matthew Perry ward off the gambling bug? When his character, Ryan, goes to Bingo with Fausta (Tonita Castro) and her friends, his old addiction resurfaces. What will Ryan bet on, or, more accurately, what won't he bet on? Find out on tonight's Go On.
Go On Starring Matthew Perry, John Cho and Laura Benanti airs on NBC Tuesdays at 9:00 pm ET.
"Everybody Needs a Good Break Up Song"
"Everybody needs a good break up song," as the group explains to Ryan as they seek to help him get over his break up with Simone (Piper Perabo). "My wife would send me CD's full of them while I was in Afghanistan," seconds Danny (Seth Morris). Unfortunately, the song the group creates for Ryan goes off track and off key, as the rhymes and lyrics are about Ryan being a racist (which he isn't). Ryan appreciates what they are trying to do, but cuts them off mid-song explaining that "this isn't helping."
Anne's Got a Hot Girlfriend, Anne's Got a Hot Girlfriend
"A good man is hard to find," gorgeous book store clerk Brittany purrs to Anne as she puts her purchases on the desk, "and a good woman is even harder." Anne is taken aback by this unexpected flirtation - but can't resist the long locks and longer legs of the beautiful book worm. Even the boys and girls in the group are jealous when they see the two of them kissing in the parking garage. Owen asks out loud, "Why is Anne with the hottest woman I've ever seen?"
A Slippery Slope From Bingo to March Madness
Who knew Bingo could unleash the tiger? When Fausta takes Ryan along to play Bingo at her church, he goes out of control, for even that simple game has reawakened the gambling bug that his late wife Janie helped suppress. He invites the group over to his house to bet on March Madness basketball games. Ryan sets up a contest in group to see who can make Owen say the most lines from the J. P. Richardson Jr. (The Big Bopper) 1958 classic "Chantilly Lace." He even starts talking gambling and point spreads at work while on the air with coaches. His friend and boss Steven (John Cho) tries to remind him of how bad his addiction was and takes action to freeze his bank account - but not before Ryan dashes off to a casino to cash in his late wife's insurance.
Can Lauren save Ryan from himself, and do it by beating him at poker? Group leader Lauren (Laura Benanti) tracks Ryan down to a casino (thanks to Mr. K - Brett Gelman- who has hacked into his phone) and takes a seat at the poker table. The other players think she is a hooker, but Ryan is mad because she is using her "counselor skills" to call his bluffs. Lauren cleans him out, but offers to give him back his money if he will promise to stop gambling - although as they leave she "accidentally" drops some chips on the roulette table - so it is Ryan who has to pull her out of the casino.
Wedding Rings in Flight
How do you finally let go? Anne comes to see Ryan, seeking mutual comfort as she has broken up with the gorgeous yet unfortunately dumb bookstore girl. They both admit they have made mistakes, but also remain tied to their late partners - as evidenced by the wedding rings they still wear. Searching for a way to let go and move on, Ryan takes a pair of helium-filled balloons and goes out on the lawn. They each tie their rings to a balloon and watch them float away....
