South by Southwest (SXSW) is an annual festival that features music, independent film and new technology. Austin, Texas’ famed festival will be held March 8-17. Festivals like SXSW are great venues for indie filmmakers to debut their work as the attendance to such festivals is staggering. In 2011, over 68,000 people visited the film installment of the festival alone. Not to mention the over 2,000 film media in attendance at the conference.
Texas may not be your first thought when you think of breakout films and directors. However Texas is the birthplace of Richard Linklater (Before Sunset, Dazed and Confused), Catherine Hardwicke (Twilight, Thirteen), Robert Rodriguez (Sin City, Once Upon a Time in Mexico) and Wes Anderson (Moonrise Kingdom, Rushmore).
